The Quaternary Period
The International Commission on Stratigraphy now recognizes three periods in the Cenozoic Era: the Paleogene, Neogene, and the Quaternary. The period of geologic time in which we currently live is the Quaternary Period and began only a few million years ago.

Quaternary Geologic Time
One last review our geologic time scale to get familiar with the Quaternary Period. As you know, it is a simplified geologic time scale constructed from the 2020/03 ICS time scale is shown in Figure 15-3. It is not drawn to scale as its focus is including all of the Periods of the Phanerozoic Eon and all of the Epochs of the Cenozoic Era.
