The Triassic & Jurassic Periods

The three periods of the Mesozoic Era stretch across almost 200 million years of geologic history (see Figure 12-2). The Triassic and Jurassic are the first two Periods of the Mesozoic Era, which is rich and filled with significant geologic and biologic events. Rocks and fossils of this age are exposed across North America, coast to coast.

Triassic & Jurassic Geologic Time

Let's use a geologic time scale to get familiar with the Triassic and Jurassic Periods. A simplified geologic time scale constructed from the 2020/03 ICS time scale is shown in Figure 12-3. It is not drawn to scale as its focus is including all of the periods of the Phanerozoic Eon and all of the epochs of the Cenozoic Era.
