The Early Paleozoic Era
The first four periods of the Paleozoic Era include the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian (see Figure 10-2). These periods are named after various areas (Cambria and Devon) and ancient Celtic tribes (Ordovices and Silures) from England and have been correlated across the Earth to places like the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Early Paleozoic Geologic Time
The Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian periods cover 182 million years of geologic time. A simplified geologic time scale constructed from the 2020/03 ICS time scale is shown in Figure 10-3. It is not drawn to scale as its focus is including all of the Periods of the Phanerozoic Eon and all of the Epochs of the Cenozoic Era.
