Part A

Navigating Through a Lab Activity

When you begin a Lab Activity, enlarge the size of your browser window so you'll have plenty of space to view everything. I suggest closing anything that isn't essential for viewing during the lab. You should start a lab activity on the Overview page. Click on "Start Lesson" to go to the Prelude where you'll see a listing of the different modules of the lab activity. Each lab activity typically includes four modules, labeled A, B, C, and D. Each module includes a set of Quiz Me! interactive questions that are scored and tallied into a total grade for the lab. As you work your way through a lab activity, you will interact with different types of media and are really what make this online experience cool and unique (and dare I say, fun). When you are finished, a score report will be forwarded to your lab instructor's e-mail to account as your lab activity grade.Let's review some of the interactive features you'll encounter in the lab activities.

Text Pop-ups

The text pop-up is a common item used in these labs. They include text, images, or other media that are embedded in a pop-up box to offer more information about the word or topic.

Sunset Crater is a cinder cone volcano located northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona.

These pop-ups will appear and then disappear as you roll the cursor over the bold, colored text. If you click on the highlighted text, it anchors the pop-up so that it will "stick-around". Simply click on the "x" to close the pop-up. They will also close if you click somewhere else on the page.

> Ron is holding a snake.

Text pop-ups are also commonly used in Examples throughout the lab activity.

Quiz Me! Pop-ups

Quiz Me! questions represent your lab questions and are identified by  notebook icons. These interactive questions have many formats and are typically (but not always) displayed as pop-ups. Simply click on the link below the Quiz Me! notebook icon, read over the question, and when you are ready, choose your answer(s). Watch for hints!

For many questions, like multiple choice, true-false, short answer, etc., click on "Check Answer" when you are done. Although the correct answer is not given directly, you will receive either positive or negative feedback for your answer. A typical Quiz Me! question is worth one point, unless otherwise indicated. Once the question is completed, your points will be added to the overall total score for the lab, displayed in the upper right corner of the page. If you don't want to answer a question right away, you can close the pop-up box by clicking on the "x" or somewhere out of the question box. Just don't click on the "Check Answer" button. Also, remember to return and answer the question!

Here is an example of a typical multiple-choice style pop-up question:

Other Quiz Me! questions are activities that can be worth multiple points. Just click on the link below the Quiz Me! notebook icon, read over the question, and when you are ready, choose your answer(s). These types of questions have many formats, like DragNDrop, Ordering, Identify, Sorting, etc., and will have instructions on how to complete the activity. Typically, credit is only given for answer choices that are correct on the first try. The credit for your answer will be scored and shown automatically as you go, and once the question is completed, your accumulated points will be added to the overall total for the lab. Do not click on "Complete activity" as this will end your ability continue the question. Again, if you don't want to answer a question right away, you can close the pop-up box by clicking on "Close". Just don't click on the "Complete activity" button.

Here is an example of a multi-point, Labeling pop-up question:

Completing a Lab

Carefully read through the lab and answer all of the "Quiz Me!" questions, preferably in order. If you don't like all the open Quiz Me! boxes on the page, you can close them after you check your answer. Remember, you can also close a question box that you've opened and it won't count towards your score as long as you haven't checked your answer or clicked "completed the activity".

The program does not save your progress - Unfortunately, the lab activity program does not save your partial progress, so be sure not to close the browser window containing the lab activity before you have completed the lab (you will lose any progress made!). Some students keep a record of their correct answers, which may be helpful if, for whatever reason, you are interrupted or need to redo the lab.

Your final score must be at least 70% - In order to demonstrate proficiency, your final score must be at least 70% (e.g., 35/50) to count for a grade - anything less will be recorded as a zero (0 points). If you are not satisfied with your score on your first try, you may repeat the activity as many times as you want and the highest score above 70% will be used for your grade. Note: if you wish to start over, you must close the browser window, and restart the activity from the beginning.

Submitting your score - When you're done with the lab and want to submit your score for credit, you need to type your name into the form at the end of the last page. Use the name listed in the Canvas gradebook; if your name is not recognizable, you won't receive a grade. Then click on "Email Score" to submit your score . You will then see a page that says "Your score has been sent! ". This means that your score report was successfully sent . If you don't see that message, the score report was not sen t. Note - there may be a lag before you see the score appear in Canvas.

A score report includes information like the time spent on the lesson, total points attempted, total points scored, percent correct, etc. and looks like this:

The following score report was sent on April 4, 2020 at 06:22:05

Total Points Possible: 50

Screenshot the Score Summary pop-up box, just in case! - Before closing the lab, return to the form at the end of the last page. Click on "Print Score Summary" and take a screenshot of the Score Summary pop-up box. You DO NOT need to send the screenshotto your instructor - it's just insurance in case there is an issue with the email submission.
